Some Asshole Doesn't Like New Comedy Films And Doesn't Understand Improvisation In Films

This piece in the New York Times is something to read. He bashes all new comedy films because there are no jokes. I agree there are very few set-ups and punchlines but there other ways to tell a joke. What is happening more is that instead of the characters telling jokes, the movies themselves tell jokes. Mr. Sternbergh has a particular problem with improv because its not scripted which to him means it’s not smart, or clever or funny even. He seems to have issue with it because it is coming from the actors and not the writer and what he intended. That line between actor and writer is just blurred; these films are a collaboration; writers and directors seem to recognize that actors can add lots of funny bits and aren’t just there to read lines. The worst part is Mr. Sternbergh quickly makes himself sound like an idiot when he can’t remember the proper titles to Apatow produced films and instead mashes them up (How convenient that he mixed pieces of actual films together). Wait, are “Get him to Sarah Marshall” and “Forgetting the Greek” jokes? I see now, it’s been so long since if seen an actual joke I didn’t recognize it. It was so funny I forgot to laugh (Get it? That’s another joke! LOL!).
